It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

This is my new hood – Vinohrady. It’s a beautiful residential area of Prague that carries a reputation of prestige and elegance and lot’s of expats like myself. It covers portions of Prague 2, 3, and 10. But I guess that really doesn’t mean anything to you does it… Most of its cool Neo-Renaissance, Art Nouveau, Pseudo Baroque, and Neo-Gothic buildings come from the second half of the 19th century and first half of the 20th century, and many have been and continue to be restored in an amazing array of color and architectural detail. Oh yeah, I do my homework baby. I just want to make sure you are getting all that you can from this here blog.

The name Vinohrady means “vineyards”. I hear that the area was covered with vineyards starting in the 14th century when Czech king Charles IV had them planted there, right around the time when he had the New Town built. The vineyards lasted for some four hundred years and were later replaced by rose gardens, orchards, and residential buildings. Yep. It’s all true.

An independent community of Vinohrady was established in 1849, encompassing the area of today’s Vinohrady and Žižkov. The area was divided into Královské Vinohrady (Royal Vinohrady) and Žižkov in 1875. Královské Vinohrady received the status of a city in 1879. A tram line between Muzeum and Flora started running in 1897. Královské Vinohrady was incorporated into Greater Prague as a district in 1922 and its name was shortened to Vinohrady in 1968.

And that’s all of the history you’re getting today. I think that’s all you really need.

And now back to our regularly scheduled bloging.

The coolest thing by far in my new hood, is the “Baby Tower”. It’s not really called that; it’s called Žižkov TV Tower. It has a bunch of black baby sculptures on it! It’s freaking awesome. It gives the impression of babies crawling up and down the tower like ants. From a distance the lil tykes look really small, but up close they are huge! Love it. You can go inside and go up the tower also. I haven’t done that yet but I plan on it. There is even a restaurant up there – sweet.

So that’s where my new apartment is. We have not moved in yet, but luckily some friends from TEFL are letting us stay with them until Monday when we get the keys. In fact, these same nice boys (Ben, Davey and Brent) live in the same building! So all we have to do is move our stuff to the fourth floor and we are done! It’s going to be just like “Friends” or “Melrose Place” around here. In fact a girl from a previous TEFL class lives directly across the hall from us. Oh, and by us I mean myself, Summer, her pal Joey and Ginny Blair (it’s a double name). It’s a long story, but there will be four of us in there. Joey plans on traveling a lot so it won’t be too bad. And hell, it’s my name on the lease so I’ll just kick bitches out if they fuck around. Ha ha ha. Just kidding.

The same day I signed the lease I went to one of my favorite places in the world: IKEA. Who knew they had IKEA in the CZ? It was like being back in the US for a couple of hours. The store is laid out exactly the same and I knew where to find everything. I got myself a comforter, sheets, candles and some bitch’n mood lighting. Davey said my room will be pimpin’, and I think he’s right. As soon as I get set up, I’ll take some pictures for ya. You will love it! I can’t wait to get a job so that I can pay for all of it and buy some more!

I finally went to the movies as well. It has been a good couple of days. Christina and I went to see “Children of Men”. Wow. It was amazing. I won’t tell you about it, but I’ll just say – go see it if you have not already done so. As for the movie theatre, also wow. It was in a bonafied shopping mall, complete with McDonald’s and four floors of shopping. And no, I have not eaten at McDonald’s yet. Geesh. (I have actually lost a lot of weight since I have been here) There is even an IMAX there! I got in with a student ID so I paid only 99kc for the movie. That’s less than five bucks! Hello! The best part is that I can walk there, or if it’s too cold I can pop on the metro, ride one stop and be at the movies. Wooo hooo!

So…these are the people in my neighborhood.
Now if I could just find a job!

  1. Yo Mighty Mouse, thanks for all the lengthy entries; you are inspirational to me in my own boring-ass life here. I’m living vicariously through your adventures. Especially anything involving that Summer friend of yours – I’m pretty sure I’m in love!!
