Monday in the Park with Jen

One of the perks of my job is something called “late cancellation”. A late cancellation is when a student cancels class after the 24-hour deadline. The reason it is a perk is that I still get paid. It’s like having a paid day off. It happens pretty often and it’s pretty cool. I get paid for not doing a darn thing. It gets a little irritating when, for example, on Monday my 2pm student cancelled AT 2pm. I had taken the metro and was getting off of the bus when he called to cancel. Normally, I would have been pissed. But, Monday was a beautiful day in Prague, and I now had the day off. What to do with a free day and sunshine and not a care in the world?

As I was riding the bus back to the Metro, I decided that I should take advantage of this sun shinny day. I should be outside in the park. I should…I should get a beer and hang out in the park! Or get a cocktail up at baby tower! I ran inside to change my clothes and re-emerged from my apartment with a big smile and big plans for relaxing. I had tried to get Jen (my friend across the hall) to join me, but she was not home. I decided at the last minute to head towards the Baby Tower. I have not been up there yet and I thought it would be fun to have a drink while looking over the city.

On my way to the Baby Tower I saw Jen duck into a produce shop. Kismet. It didn’t take long to talk her into joining me. In fact she suggested that we add ice cream to the equation and sit in JZP Park. A fabulous idea!

So there we sat…and drank Gambrinus …and ate ice cream bars…and ate paprika chips…and hung out with the bums. What? Oh, yeah. The park by our house in infested with homeless folks during nice weather. And remember, it’s legal to drink on the street here so – summer is indeed a bum’s holiday. Anyway, we managed to pick the one bench that was in the middle of the bum nucleus. It was kind of funny so we decided to stay put and enjoy the weather and the fact that, hey, we live in Prague. God bless it. A pretty nice start to the week if I do say so myself.

What’s to come? What’s on the horizon? Well, this weekend we are having an 80’s Prom-Patrick’s party, and then next Friday I am off to Geneva for the weekend. (I’ve always wanted to say that!) I am still poor and getting poorer, but hell. What’s money for if not to spend/ I want to get a tattoo while I am here, but that might have to wait until I find a sponsor or a sugar daddy or … another job.

  1. Looks like a nice way to spend some quality time with the ones you love. Happy to see that a little sunshine has brightened that beautiful smile of yours! May Irish eyes shine upon thee, my darlin’.
