I collect hobbies. I have never understood people who exclaim, “I’m bored” in any place other than an airport on a really long layover in a really un-entertaining city. People who allow themselves to get bored are just not very creative. How can you be bored when there is so much out there to do, and enjoy?
Like I said, I collect hobbies. I read, write, play the ukulele, sing, listen to music, watch movies, do crossword puzzles, and play video games or computer word games. I cook, bake, make ice cream, exercise, study, dance and paint. As a matter of fact, just last weekend I decided I would begin water-color painting. Years ago I went through a phase where I painted all the time. I guess I just stopped. I was never very good but that never stopped me from enjoying the process.I like mixing the colors and playing with the brushes.I never know how it is going to look until I am finished. I like that. I like having a hobby that forces me to not be “perfect” (as if!) and also keeps my brain firing. I like learning new skills and then getting really good at them.
My mom paints. Not many people know that, and many people know my mom. She was a popular woman back in the day. She still is. When I was little I found a yellow suitcase in one of our cubby holes. It had leather corners, a brown leather handle, and the yellow part had the appearance of alligator skin. To a little girl like me it looked just like a secret treasure. When I opened it I found paintings, sketches, paints, brushes, and assorted other art stuff. I was in heaven. When I told my mom what I found, she claimed ownership and tried to down play it as something she used to do but wasn’t very good at. Come to find out years later that two of the paintings hanging in my childhood home were painted by my mom.
I’ll keep painting. I might not be very good at it, but who the fuck cares. I don’t need to be the best at everything I do. I just need to be happy doing it. All of the photos in this post are of my own original (or unoriginal as the case may be) art work. I used watercolors. I got them at Michael’s.
